"Who is the most handsome guy in the universe?!"

"세상에서 가장 잘 생긴 남자는 누구일까요?"

 

This question was posed to the crowd by the Emcee, Bukoh Mary, the 93.3FM DJ, 
and you'd find over 2,000 fans screaming one single name in unison, sending goosebumps 
down my spine, influencing me to go along with the horde. In the grand ballroom 
on the 31 July, Saturday, at Marina Bay Sands, only one person could evoke such intense 
response and emotion. He is none other than Lee Minho, the Korean Star and Ambassador for LG Optimus GT540.

엠씨 Bukoh Mary (93.3FM DJ임) 씨가 이 질문을 던졌을 때, 2000명 이상의 팬이 한 남자의 이름을 일제히 외치는 것을 보고는 
온몸에 전율이 퍼지면서 그들을 따라 움직이게 되었다. 7월 31일 토요일, 마리아 베이 샌즈 호텔에 위치한 그랜드 볼륨에서는 
오직 한 사람만이 그렇게 강렬한 반응과 감정을 이끌어낼 수 있었다. 
그는 다름아닌 LG 옵티머스 GT540 홍보대사인 한국의 스타 '이민호' 이다.

 

Fans were seen queuing up at the entrance as early as 7am so as to get the best seats to see Lee Minho 
in the Meet & Greet session, which would only commence at 2:30pm. The cold settings in the ballroom was 
unable to freeze the strong passion and anticipation of the Lee Minho's supporters.

오후 2:30분에 진행될 Meet & Greet 행사에서 '이민호'를 볼 수 있는 가장 좋은 좌석을 차기하기 위해서 
무려 새벽 7시부터 행사장 입구에서 줄을 서고 있는 팬들의 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 
행사장 내의 찬 기운도 '이민호' 팬들의 강렬한 열정과 기대를 얼릴 수는 없었다.

 

When Lee Minho finally appeared, there was a huge uproar and the horde literally became frenzy, 
desperately trying to take both a closer look and photos of the Korean star. The 1.87m star wore a smooth black 
outfit with white inner shirt which greatly enhanced his facial features under the dazzling spotlight. 
Some were lucky to receive a rose each handed by Minho himself as he walked up to the stage.

'이민호'가 마침내 등장했을 때, 커다란 함성이 일며 팬들은 말 그대로 열광하기 시작했다. 
이 한국인 스타를 보다 가까이서 보면서 동시에 사진을 찍기 위해 미친듯이 노력하기 시작했다. 
키 187cm 의 스타 '이민호'는 흰색 셔츠에 검정 의상을 입고 있었는데 화려한 스포트라이트 아래에서 그의 얼굴이 굉장히 돋보였다.

 

There was a Q&A session with the fans and one particularly struck me. A fan asked how Minho would rate himself in his acting. 
The 23 year old is humble in his answer, giving himself 5 out of 10 as he feels that he is hardworking, despite differing views 
of the crowd (Some cried out 11). He added shortly that he would leave the remaining 5 to the public to determine 
and it brought the fans cheering 10 for Lee Minho.

팬들과의 Q&A 세션이 있었는데 그 중 특히 놀라운 답변이 있었다. 어느 팬이 '민호'에게 자신의 연기를 어떻게 평가하는지를 물었다. 
23살의 배우는 대답에 있어 매우 겸손하게 자신에게 10점 중 5점을 주었다. 보다 더 열심히 노력해야 한다고 느끼기 때문이라고 했다. 
물론 팬들의 의견은 달랐지만 말이다 (몇몇은 11점을 외치기도). 나머지 5점은 대중이 판단하도록 남겨두겠다고 그가 짧게 덧붙이자, 
팬들은 '이민호'를 위해 10점을 환호했다.

 

Apart from the game to test the knowledge of the fans on the Korean star, Minho was to made to make 3 calls, randomly chosen 
from a pool of tickets. When he realised the other party was from China, he attempted to chat by saying, "Ni Hao" - meaning "hello" 
in Mandarin. One of the 3 receivers asked Minho what type of woman he would look for and Minho's first reply was "You" 
and it brought the  crowd to a greater level of hysteria.

이 한국인 스타에 대한 팬들의 지식을 테스트하는 게임 외에도, '민호'는 무작위로 뽑은 티켓으로 3번의 전화를 걸게 되었다. 
상대방이 중국에서 왔다는 것을 깨닫자, 그는 '니하오 (만다린어로 Hello)' 라고 말을 하며 대화를 시도했다. 
3명의 수신인 중 한명이 그가 어떤 타입의 여성을 원하는지를 질문하자 
'민호'의 첫번째 대답은 "당신(YOU)" 였고, 팬들을 훨씬 더 흥분시켰다.

 

You may feel that Lee Minho sure knows how to cheer fans up. But he is genuinely concerned for his fans and did his best 
to fulfil their desire. Minho was to sketch 10 pictures for his fans and after a few drawings, he began to draw out what his fans 
demanded, such as a chilli crab, his hand and even his kiss! He nearly used the lipstick of an enthusiastic fan 
who was quick in passing it to Lee Minho and the horde broke into ecstasy and was filled with envy. 
But the plan was foiled when his assistant handed him his personal lipstick and you can see the disappointment 
in that fan's face. Aww...

'이민호'는 어떻게 하면 팬을 즐겁게 할 수 있는지를 확실히 알고 있다고 생각할 수 도 있다. 하지만 그는 진심으로 자신의 팬들을 염려했고 
팬들의 열망을 충족시키기 위해 최선을 다했다. '민호'는 팬을 위해 10장의 그림을 그리기로 되어 있었는데, 몇 장 그린 뒤에는 팬들이 원하는 것 
예를 들면 칠리 크랩, 자신의 손 모양 그리고 심지어는 자신의 키스 까지도 그리기 시작했다!! 그는 한 열성팬이 재빨리 그에게 건네준 립스틱을 
거의 사용할 뻔 했고 다른 팬들은 황홀경에 빠지며 부러움으로 가득찼다. 하지만 그의 수행원이 개인 립스틱(민호 자신의??)을 건네주면서 
계획은 수포가 되었고, 열성팬은 실망스런 모습을 보였다. 아....

 

In addition, when he was told to throw the 10 pictures to the crowd, he asked the emcee if it would be too dangerous as he did not 
wish to risk anyone getting hurt. With such grace and thoughtfulness, I find myself liking the Korean star increasingly. 
Although I wasn't among the fortunate who managed to take photos with Lee Minho on stage, or getting a signed poster, 
or a firm handshake (from what I heard from those who managed), I consoled myself that at the very least, 
I attended a worthy event. A memorable one where I got near Lee Minho less than a metre away. 
Even though he wasn't looking at me...

게다가, 자신이 그린 10장의 그림을 팬들에게 던져 달라는 말을 듣자, 어느 누구라도 다치기를 원하지 않았기 때문에 
너무 위험하지 않을런지 엠씨에게 묻기도 했다. 이런 우아함과 배려심을 가진 이 한국의 스타를 점점 더 좋아하게 되는 내 자신을 발견할 수 있었다. 
물론 내 자신은 무대위에서 '이민호'와 사진을 찍거나, 혹은 사인 포스터를 얻거나, 혹은 악수를 하거나 하지는 못했지만, 
최소한 이 뜻깊은 이벤트에 참가했다는 걸로 내 자신을 위로했다. '이민호'의 1미터 이내 근처에 갈 수 있었던 기억할만한 이벤트였다. 
물론 그는 나를 쳐다보지는 않았지만....
